Missouri River Fly Fishing Report

“Three day weekend to catch all them fishes.”

Current Flows: 4,700
Hatch Report: Tricos, Caddis, Hoppers, Pseudos, Midges

It’s weedy out there folks. Things are starting to cool down so and it’s on the tougher side. You’ve got tricos, midges, and pseudos in the afternoon but starting later due to lower temps. Caddis are hanging around. Subsurface is the ticket for success. We’ve got another round of BWOs in a few weeks and then some October caddis will show up. Fall is on its way but right now we’re in the late dog days of weedy summer on the Mo’.

Nymphing: Frenchie, Military May, Blooms Weight Fly, Warrior Perdigon, Green Machine, Lightning Bug, Case Caddis, Tungsten Dart

Our guides are still playing the girdle with small dropper game. Once the temps heat up, in the afternoon switch to terrestrials but make sure you put a dropper on the bottom. You’ll catch fish with hoppers or an ant but again, most of the success is subsurface right now.

Dry FliesCorn Fed Caddis, Double Duck, Hi-Vis Rusty Spinner, Cluster Midge, Hi-Vis Trico, Harrops Palmered Tan Caddis, Translucent Caddis, Missing Link Caddis, CDC Caddis Tan, Purple Crazy

It’s going to be hurry up and make it happen situation because the spinner fall is really sparse. Ants and terrestrials could be fun.

Streamers: Cravens Swim Coach, Lil’ Kim, Sparkle Minnow, Gold/Silver Kreelex, Chockletts Game Changer, JJ Special, Galloups Butt Monkey, Thin Mint Bugger, Skiddish Smolt, Zirdle

Streamers have pickled up in activity but you just have to deal with the weeds. Wade fishing streamers — 99 percent of your fishing is down stream and across which can be harder but not impossible.

From a boat you can fish 360 degrees off the edge. Sometimes we do throw it back up stream fishing the bank and let it drift back down. Or you can fish it straight in and straight back and you can swing it. People are fishing a variety of sizes. With the weeds the hard part with the articulated flies is you’ve got  two hooks so it’s a little bit more work to get the weeds off both hooks. Most people are fishing single hook sparkle minnor, lil Kim or reelex and make sure your choice is bright and flashy
